VOCABULARY (wip)

Evan McCulloch is prone to heavy use of Scottish/Glaswegian slang and idioms, many of whose meanings may not be immediately apparent! Allow this to serve as a handy-dandy reference guide. Some of the definitions are approximations, since context of course doesn't translate over exactly. Unsure about something? Comment here and I'll add it.


Away and (chase yourself, boil your head, etc.) - Go away
Away ya go - Expression of disbelief, or... away you go
Bampot/Bamstick - Crazy person/idiot
Barney - Fight
Belter - Brilliant, great
Bevvy - Beverage, alcohol
Bint - Derogatory word for "woman"
Braw - Great
Daftie - Idiot
Do your dinger - Expression of disapproval
(Easy as) Falling off a dyke - (Easy as) falling off a wall
Fit like - How are you
Hen - When he doesn't know a woman's name
Hell slap it into ya - It's your own fault
Howzitgaun - How's it going!
Gaun yourself - Phrase of encouragement
Greetin-faced - Miserable looking
I dinnae ken - I don't know
Jaisket - Jacket
Jim/Jimmy/Mac - When he doesn't know a guy's name
Keep the heid - Stay calm
Mince - Nonsense, rubbish
Off your (noun) - Drunk, usually
Peely Wally - Ill
Rammy - Fight
Scunnered - Annoyed, bored
Swankin(g) - Joking
The keech in your coffee - The downside, the "shit"
Wean - Child
